Orion’s™ futuristic design takes an important step in advancing the science of Doppler weather radar. Fully scaleable, flexible, and agile the Orion™ can be configured in X-, C-, or S-band to accommodate many different applications and price points. Available in dual-polarimetric or single-channel.
Technological Summary
| • |
WDS’ new science-based design techniques have eliminated many common mechanical and electronic components resulting in the ultimate integrated, lightweight, versatile single-package solution. Fully scaleable, flexible, and agile the Orion™ can be configured in X-, C-, or S-band to accommodate many different applications.

| • |
Innovative design based on an antenna-mounted transceiver in single self-contained integrated-package. Total system is located inside the radome (protected in a temperature and humidity controlled environment enhancing performance characteristics and extending product life). Lightweight, transmitter/receiver design can incorporate TWT, Klystron, or SSA platforms.
| • |
Flexible architecture allows frequency diversity over horizontal and vertical channels further enhancing cross-pol isolation. Total control of its transmitter output waveform including but not limited to LFM (linear frequency modulation) and NLFM (non-linear frequency modulation).
| • |
A fully phase-coherent Doppler utilizing pulse compression that can operate simultaneously on horizontal and vertical polarizations, slant 45, and several other configurations.
| • |
Hydrometeor classification algorithms run at the DSP level providing greater display flexibility by reducing the math burden at the display level.
| • |
Scaleable both in transmit power and antenna size.
| • |
Equipped with precision composite antennas and orthomode feed assemblies that yield cross-pol isolation greater than 40dB with excellent side lobe characteristics. Precision composite antennas guarantee dimensional stability over the entire antenna surface, unlike thin, spun aluminum reflectors.
| • |
All Orion™ systems incorporate the RVP-8™ and RVP-9™ Doppler signal processor. The RVP-8™ is now installed on all National Weather Service WSR 88D systems. |
